exam afterthoughts.
nope, i'm not here to whine about the papers i've done so far (though i must say, jap today wasn't as straightforward as i thought it would be), i'm here to say i'm APPALLED at the way the university here runs exams. seriously.
1) i can close one eye about local students turning up late for classes, because there are some people like that, sometimes including myself, in singapore too. BUT, when they also start exams late, then that says a lot right? i mean okay, so the exam was supposed to start at 5.15pm. but at that time, the hall was still half empty. in the end, the official time we started was 5.20pm. tell me, when does this happen back in ntu? you come in 5 mins late, you have 5 mins less to do your paper, and not the other way round, where the invigilator starts late for you.
2) chief examiners who just make you want to go, "HUH?! WTH." the one i met today, goodness gracious. "Time's up, please stop writing. (a short pause) okay you may leave the hall now, please remember to take all your belongings." hello? the other invigilators were still halfway through collecting our exam scripts! what if the number of scripts don't tally? what if someone tries to sneak in an answer amongst the chaos of a couple of hundreds of students leaving the hall?? omg. by the way, i had trouble understanding his english too.
3) they don't dismiss the whole hall at the same time, they dismiss those whose papers are tallied first. and the invigilators actually had to shout, "(level) 2, 3, 4, you can go now", "(level) 1, cannot, wait". -_- very disorganised i feel. the number of scripts dint tally. it took them a good FIFTEEN minutes to figure out the problem - UNCOLLECTED scripts on the tables of absentees. best.

4) exam questions that don't match! seriously, the instructions say one thing on the question paper, and another on the answer booklet. for example, yesterday's jap - the question paper says to write in "hiragana", but the example in the answer booklet was different and the instructions say to "fill in appropriate words" / "fill in the gaps" - something like that. it was only 5 mins to the end of exam that i realised the "hiragana" in the question paper and made a mad rush trying to change all my kanji to hiragana! -_- don't know if that's the right thing to do, but hey, i followed the question!
okay so you think i'm kicking up a big fuss out of nothing? well, i just think little things like these can reflect a lot on what the culture of a society is like. outsiders say singapore is too strict, too orderly. but hey, at least there is organisation, at least there is a standard way of doing things please.
